Alphonse Mucha (July 14, 1860-July 24, 1939) was born in the Southern Moravian town of Ivan_ice in the present-day Czech Republic, and is widely considered to be the master of the Czech Art Nouveau style. Mucha's distinctive posters and advertisements, many featuring female figures, are notable for their creative use of color palettes, intricate gilding, and lettering. His love and study of drawing began at an early age, and his artistic education continued when, in 1887, he moved to Paris, to study and work producing illustrations for advertisements and magazines. In the early 1890s, Mucha began designing posters featuring the actress Sarah Bernhardt, gaining him widespread success. In addition to his advertisements for liquors, cigarettes, and theatrical events, Mucha is known for his serial prints, which cover a range of subjects such as the four seasons, the times of day, and the arts. Though his style was considered outdated at the time of his death, his lithographs and posters have become internationally recognized for their importance to the Art Nouveau movement.
