Franz Marc (February 8, 1880-March 4, 1916) was one of the most important figures in the German Expressionist movement, which was a keystone in the emergence of modernism. Born in Munich, Marc was the son of a professional landscape painter and was encouraged to study art at a young age. After enrolling in the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, Marc traveled to Paris and Greece, where he met influential working artists such as August Macke, with whom he formed the journal Der Blaue Reiter. Working with vibrant colors and bold forms, Marc was heavily influenced by the Cubists and the Futurists working at the time, inspiring him to depict natural subjects in an abstract manner. Marc met a tragic end when, enlisted in the German Army during the First World War, he was killed by a shell splinter before he would have learned that he had been withdrawn from battle due to his status as a notable German artist.
