  • Artist: Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt (July 14, 1862-February 6, 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and a formative figure of international Modernism that emerged at the turn of the century. Klimt was also one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession, a group that worked to support young, emerging, unconventional artists while claiming no single artistic manifesto or style. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other art objects. Though he received public commissions in his early years in Vienna, Klimt's work was met with criticism and rejection. Perceived as pornographic and radical, Klimt's treatment of the female body as his primary subject matter was at times openly erotic, but is now considered masterful. In the first decade of the twentieth century, Klimt entered what is known as his Golden Phase, which was marked by positive critical reaction and success. Many of his paintings from this period (which derived its name from the prominent use of gold leaf in his paintings) are considered beacons of the Art Nouveau period.

  • Artwork Details

Garden Path with Chickens might be one of Gustav Klimt's lesser known works, but not for lack of aesthetic quality or appeal. Rather, it is simply because no one has seen it for over 50 years. Like so many other works, Garden Path with Chickens fell victim to Nazi forces during the Second World War. Removed from its home in the Erich Lederer Collection before the war, supposedly for safekeeping, the painting was housed in the Schloss Immendorfer in Austria. In 1945, the castle and all of its contents, including the painting, were burned to the ground by retreating SS troops after the fall of the Reich. Luckily, an image of this painting still remains, though the 1917 original was lost forever.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great service but print off Hi there. I bought this for my parents for their birthday. I was happy with the online process and choices and with the price. I absolutely love this painting however my mom said that the print they received is discoloured...she said it is not like the painting with the vibrant colour but the print seems to be a misprint with mostly colours of yellow and black...the framing is fine but the print is faulty. Would we be able to get exchange it for a new print? Thank you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This picture is true to color and even enlarged to maximum size the image is crisp. I like this picture so much that I am going to pick one of the flower colors from it and paint the room where it is hung that color.
