Late-nineteenth-century Paris experienced a blossoming in the popularity of cabarets, music halls, and dance halls. One of the most well-known at the time was the Folies-Bergère. Located near the famously bohemian Boulevard Montmartre, the Folies-Bergère opened in 1869, the first institution of its kind to appear in Paris. For just 2 francs, Parisians could come in to enjoy singing, dancing, and various other entertainments, from operettas to pantomime. The subject of many paintings, lithograph prints, and posters, it was a favorite of artists of the time. The Folies-Bergère has maintained its fame and reputation since it opened its doors, still putting on fabulous musical and theatrical performances to this day.
