  • Artist: Juan Gris

Born and raised in Madrid, Cubist painter and sculptor Juan Gris (March 23, 1887-May 11, 1927) was one of the many artists who were drawn to the cultural epicenter of Paris at the turn of the century. Forming friendships with artistic heavyweights such as Amedeo Modigliani, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso, Gris began his artistic career with illustrations and sketches for Parisian publications such as Le Rire and Le Charivari, until he began to paint seriously in 1911. Over time, Gris developed a singular style within the Cubist movement, harmonizing colors rather than using monotones and creating pure, distinct forms, working often in collage. Later in his career, Gris branched out into design and aesthetic theory, designing set for the Ballets Russes and giving lectures at the Sorbonne.
