Peggy Weiss was born in New Iberia, Louisiana, and grew up in Midland, Texas. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Texas at Austin and has been known in the Austin community as a successful restaurateur, author and philanthropist since the 1970's. These preoccupations, however, have not been her only focus. More recently, she has acquired a reputation for being an original yet accessible visual artist, turning her attention to digital printmaking, a medium evolved over the past decade from revolutionary advances in digital imaging and computing technologies.
In her studio, inspired by the ordinary passages of 20th century life and the photographs upon which they were recorded, Weiss transforms her digitally rendered images into whimsical leaps of the imagination. Foraging through the family histories of friends, relatives and strangers alike, she appropriates found snapshots from times gone by and deconstructs and reassembles them into compelling works of art, applying as she goes her own personal touches with the broad range of tools available to the digital artist today.
These efforts, filled with purposeful contradictions and sly inferences, result in exquisitely produced digital prints, images that remind us of the fanciful dreams or cautionary tales of childhood, playful yet haunting, appearing at first conventional and then, the more we study them, defying convention. Weiss's prints are conceived and executed in a Macintosh computer networked to a scanner and digital tablet, using Photoshop CS4 and various other digital imaging tools.
Her work is in private collections around the country, including New York, and was formerly exhibited in the White House.
