  • Artist: Rembrandt

Rembrandt van Rijn (July 15, 1606-October 4, 1669) has fascinated art historians for hundreds of years. An exceptional painter, etcher, and draftsman, he is one of the most important figures in Dutch painting. Born in Leiden, Rembrandt lived and worked for most of his life in Amsterdam, opening a studio and eventually taking on students of his own. Obsessed with painting from direct observation, Rembrandt’s mastery of light, atmosphere, and texturing is unparalleled. This is particularly evident in his many portraits and self-portraits, as well as his biblical and mythological scenes. It was his portraiture that garnered him attention and success as a painter throughout his lifetime. His many self-portraits have come to be regarded as a sort of intimate autobiography, and are thus some of the most treasured of his works in his considerable oeuvre.
